JAKARTA (RambuPolitic) – It is almost certain now that Joko Widodo, the incumbent President, picks Mahfud MD, former Constitutional Court Judge and a former minister, as vice presidential candidate for the 2019 Presidential Election. The pair will face Prabowo Subianto-Sandiaga Uno pair.
In late afternoon, President Joko Widodo is gathering with political parties leaders, who are supporting him, in Central Jakarta before declaring Mahfud MD as his partner in the 2019 Presidential Election.
The nine political parties head, including Megawati Soekarnoputri, Golkar Party chairman Airlangga Hartarto, National Democratic Party Head Surya Paloh, Awakening Party Head Mumaimin Iskandar, PPP Head Romahurmuziy, Perindo Head Hary Tanoe, PSI Head Grace Natalie, Hanura Chairman Osman Sapta Odang and PKPI Head Dia Hendropriyono, are now gathering at Plataran Restaurant Menteng in Jl HOS Cokroaminoto No. 42, Menteng.
At the same time, volunteers of Joko Widodo are now gathering at Independent Declaration Monument area, where the declaration will be officially announced.
Early in the day, sources of Gerindra Party has revealed that Prabowo Subianto has picked Jakarta vice governor Sandiaga Uno as his VP Candidate in the 2019 Presidential Election.
Mahfud Md has told reporters that he was asked to stand-by last night and this morning he was asked to submit his resume to the President Joko Widodo.
He said there are three reasons why he is ready to be picked as VP Candidate, first, Jokowi’s electability is higher, therefore the chance to win is greater. The second reason is that President Joko Widodo has trust in him and he wants to prove the President’s trust by showing his commitment. The third is the ‘historical calling’ as he has become an activist and wants to keep staying in the ‘fighting zone’.
Meanwhile, Prabowo’s decision to pick Uno has chaos havoc and ‘mini earthquake’ in the national political landscape. A senior official at Democratic Party, Andi Arief, expressed his disappointment and anger as Prabowo has picked Uno, instead of Agus H. Yudhoyono as Prabowo’s VP Candidate. he dubbed Prabowo as a #Jenderal Kardus (General Cardboard), referring to someone who is untrusted. This has caused jittery in social media and mainstream media.
Both parties leaders, however, have tried to cool down the tension ahead of the declaration of Prabowo’s VP Candidate, scheduled for later tonight. (*)
