Pertamina, Sojitz Corporation to build 250 MW gas power plant in North Sumatera

JAKARTA (rambuenergy.com) – State energy company PT Pertamina (Persero), Sojitz Corporation of Japan and PT Pembangunan Prasarana Sumatera Utara have inked a deal to develop gas power plant (PLTGU) with capacity of 1 x 250 MW in North Sumatera. The three parties signed an MoU on Friday (Oct 16).

Pertamina said the agreement is part of efforts by the company to help address power shortages in the region as well as a move to optimize the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) produced by the Arun Receiving, Hub and Regasification Terminal in Aceh. The gas from the gas terminal is transported to Belawan via gas pipeline operated by Pertamina’s subsidiary Pertagas.

The MoU was signed by Vice President Gas and Power Commercialization of Pertamina Ginanjar, General manager, Power Project Department of Sojitz Corporation Takuji Asano and President Director of T Pembangunan Prasarana Sumatera Utara Tasimin Muhammad Tasya. The signing agreement was witnessed by acting North Sumatera Governor Tengku Erry Nuradi and SVP Gas and Power of Pertamina Djohardi angga Kusumah.

At present, Pertamina has delivered gas to PLN power plant in Belawan from Arun receiving terminal at a volume of 90 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD). Data from PLN North Sumatera indicates that the province needs additional 700-800 MW of electricity to meet demands from both industries and households.

The construction of the gas power plant (PLTGU), which is expected to require gas of 35 MMSCFD, is expected to be completed in 2019. (*)
