President Jokowi surprised by ‘sea of people’ during presidential inauguration day

JAKARTA (Rambu Energy) – Newly installed Indonesian President  Joko Widodo, popularly called Jokowi, said that he was really surprised by the ‘sea of people’ standing in the Sudirman and Thamrin main streets during his Presidential Inauguration Day on Monday (Oct 20). He sees that the people have a high expectation on the new government that needs to be translated with hard-work to make changes.

After taking oath before members of the People’s Consultative Assembly President Joko Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla left for the State Palace. Both were welcome by tens of thousands of people from Semanggi intersection down to the State Palace.

He was even surprised with sea of people in the Hotel Indonesia roundabout (Bundaran Hotel Indonesia) who were ready to take him to the Palace. Tens of people later followed him on the way to the State Palace.

“I was really surprised seeing the sea of people from DPR (Parliament building), Semanggi  down to the State Palace. I don’t know what they want, but I imagine that they have a very high hope, very high expectation. This is a burden but also a responsibility of us (President and Vice President) to answer this expectation,” Joko Widodo said during an interview in the front yard of the State Palace with Najwa Shihab, Metro TV news anchor.

Joko Widodo admitted that he never sees such sea of people in his life, standing under the heat of the daily light. “I think they want big changes. But this (change) will go through a process. It won’t happen overnight. This will become our responsibility. We have difficult tasks ahead of us,” Joko Widodo said.

He said that the big expectation has to be translated into good policies.

Asked whether Jokowi, his popular name, has ever dreamed of becoming President, he said he has never had a dream to become a Municipality head, a governor, let alone becoming President. “Life is mystery. Our lifeline has been determined by the God Almighty,” he said.

The President said that in the first week, he will form a cabinet, meeting with governors, regency heads, Army Chief, National Police Chief to find out real problems at present as well as foreign countries guests will come to see him.

Joko Widodo said he has received inputs from the Corruption Eradication Commission as well as the Financial Transaction Report and Analysis Center (PPATK), which prompted him to make few changes of the cabinet members list.

He admitted that the cabinet list will not satisfy all people. “What is clear that I want to form a “working cabinet”. I want ministers who are willing to go to the ground to see the roots of the problems, to listen to the aspiration of the people. It is that simple,” Joko Widodo said.

Early in the day, President Joko Widodo said in his inauguration speech that the future of Indonesia is in the sea given large part of Indonesian territory is maritime area. He called on Indonesian to work hard to return the greatness of Indonesian in the sea.

“We want to become a nation that can craft its own future. A big nation which is creative, which can contribute to the dignity of global culture. We have to work as hard as possible to return Indonesia as a maritime country. Ocean, sea, strait and bay are the future of our lifelihood. We have been too long ignore the ocean,” President Joko Widodo said. (*)
