JAKARTA (Rambu Energy) – In early down Thursday (Oct 2), the newly installed House of Representative (DPR) elected new House Speaker Setya Novanto, treasury of Golkar Party and a confidante of current Golkar chairman Aburizal Bakrie.
The House plenary session to elect new the House Speaker, which was broadcast live by a number of national televisions, was marked by delays, interruptions, with four party factions walked out.
Fadli Zon of Gerindra Party, Agus Hermanto of Democratic Party, Fahri Hamzah of Justice Party (PKS) and Taufik Kurniawan of National Mandate Party (PAN) were appointed as Deputy House Speakers.
Under the controversial and recently agreed new system, House Speaker and four deputies are elected in one “package”. All of the above politicians are from pro-Prabowo Subianto coalition party. Six parties, including Democratic Party supported the above package.
The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), National Democratic Party (Nasdem), Hanura and Awakening Party (PKB) factions failed to come up with a proposed package due to shortage of supporting party. The four party factions, which won the presidential election and supported President-elect Joko Widodo and VP-elect Jusuf Kalla, opted to walk out from the plenary session to elect new House Speaker.
The media and public have criticized Golkar Party’s move to propose Setya Novanto’s as candidate for the new House Speaker earlier due to his bad reputation in the public sphere. The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has questioned Setya Novanto as witness in a number of corrupt cases over the past years. (*)
